Do you know what your love language is?

More importantly, do you know what your partner’s love language is?

More than likely, you have heard the phrase “love language,” and you may or may not know that it comes from the book The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate by Gary Chapman.

Published in 1992, this New York Times bestseller has sold 12 million copies and has been translated into 50 languages.

I was inspired to post about it because my partner’s birthday is coming up and one of his love languages just might be “gifts” – giving and receiving. For the record, I think mine might be “acts of service,” so moving my car on street-sweeping day says love to me 🙂 A massage would be nice too as it seems to involve three languages at once – physical touch, quality time, and acts of service!

The five love languages

  • Words of affirmation
  • Gifts
  • Physical touch
  • Quality time
  • Acts of service

According to this article, “words of affirmation” is the most common love language, and “gifts” is the least common.

Have fun with it

Although the information about love languages is interesting, it doesn’t stop there. The key is to learn to speak your partner’s love language, not just to communicate your own. This is a process of awareness and transformation. You can start by asking yourself how you give and receive love and then ask your partner what they think (about you as well as themselves).

Furthermore, as with anything, don’t get boxed in. Learning about love languages can be fun and entertaining, like reading about each other’s astrological signs, but don’t let the experience drastically affect your relationship. All is not hopeless if one of you responds to acts of service and the other to gift-giving/receiving!

Confession: I have not read this book (yet!), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t! My sister has been recommending it to me for years (I have not read the infamous Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus either), but I am just more of a whodunit and erotica bookworm… I hope that won’t stop you from accepting the “gift” of my research here 🙂

Also, boudoir shots can make a great gift if your partner speaks that love language ❤
